Why Does the Same Percentile Need Different Marks?
NTA uses equi-percentile normalization. Your raw marks don't matter as much as your relative position within your shift. In an easy paper where everyone scores 20-30 marks higher, even a 200-mark score might only place you at the 97th percentile — whereas the same 200 marks on a tough paper could be 99th percentile.
Marks vs Percentile — FAQs
❓ Which JEE Main 2026 January shift was the easiest?
January 21 Shift 2 (Evening) was the easiest — requiring 171 marks for 99 percentile, compared to just 155 marks in the toughest shift (Jan 22 S2). This 16-mark gap is why selecting your shift in the predictor matters enormously.
❓ Why does the same percentile need different marks in different shifts?
NTA uses equi-percentile normalization. Your performance is ranked within your shift, then mapped to a common scale. In an easy paper where everyone scores higher, even a strong score gets a lower percentile. The normalization corrects for this — so your relative position within the shift determines your final percentile, not the absolute marks.
❓ How many marks for 99 percentile in JEE Main April 2026?
Based on difficulty calibration from January 2026 data, a moderate April shift would need approximately 162–168 marks for 99 percentile. An easy April shift could need 170–175, while a tough shift might require only 155–160. Use the interactive predictor to get a shift-specific estimate.
❓ Does JEE Advanced cutoff percentile change every year?
Yes, it varies slightly. In 2025, the General category cutoff was 93.2%ile. For 2026, it is expected between 93–95%ile based on candidate count trends. Roughly speaking, you need ~90 marks on a moderate shift (or ~100 on an easy shift) to clear the JEE Advanced cutoff.
