How NTA Normalization Works
NTA uses a relative ranking system called Percentile Score. It represents the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below that specific candidate in that session. Since paper difficulty varies across shifts, your raw marks are mapped to a percentile to ensure fairness.
⚠️ The "Jan 27" Factor:
In extremely easy shifts (like Jan 27 S1 in 2024), the 99 percentile can skyrocket to 235+ marks. In contrast, for tough shifts, 155 marks might be enough for the same percentile.

What is a safe percentile for top NITs like Surathkal or Trichy?
For top NITs and popular branches like CSE or IT, a percentile of 99.5+ is usually required for the General category. For other branches, 98+ percentile can often secure a seat in top-tier NITs.
How does NTA calculate the percentile score?
The percentile is calculated based on the relative performance of all candidates in a specific shift. It is NOT your percentage of marks. It indicates how many students scored equal to or less than you in that session.
Is it easier to get a high percentile in Session 1 (January)?
Statistically, Session 1 often has fewer unique candidates and students are sometimes less prepared compared to April. However, NTA normalization ensures fairness across both sessions.
What are the expected qualifying marks for JEE Advanced 2026?
Based on trends, the qualifying percentile for the General category is expected to be around 90-91. For OBC-NCL, it is usually 75-78, and for SC/ST, it ranges between 45-55.
