Frequently Asked Questions

How is JEE Main rank calculated from percentile?

NTA provides percentile scores (not raw marks) after each JEE Main session. Your All-India Rank is estimated using the formula: Rank ≈ (100 − Percentile) × Total Candidates / 100. For Session 1 (Jan 2026), approximately 13.05 lakh candidates appeared, so a 97% percentile translates to roughly rank 39,000.

What is NTA percentile and how is it different from percentage?

NTA percentile is a relative score that indicates the percentage of candidates you performed better than. For example, a 95 percentile means you scored higher than 95% of students in your session. It is NOT the same as the percentage of marks obtained - it's a normalized, comparative measure.

Does shift difficulty affect my JEE Main rank?

NTA uses a normalization process to equalize scores across different shifts. However, minor variations can occur. If your shift was reported as easier, more students may have scored high, potentially pushing your rank slightly higher (worse). Our tool applies small adjustments based on reported shift difficulty trends.

How does JEE Main tie-breaking work?

If two candidates have the same overall NTA percentile, JEE resolves ties in this order: (1) Higher Mathematics percentile is ranked higher, (2) Higher Physics percentile, (3) Higher Chemistry percentile, (4) Older candidate by date of birth. Our tool displays your subject-wise tie-break priority based on these rules.

Can I use this tool for Session 2 (April 2026)?

Yes - select 'Session 2 (Apr 2026)' in the session selector. The total candidate count for Session 2 is estimated based on historical trends (~12 lakh). Once NTA releases official numbers, we'll update the tool for more accurate predictions.

How accurate is this rank predictor?

Our predictor aims for ±5% accuracy around the estimated rank. The core formula is based on NTA's official percentile methodology. However, actual ranks may vary due to exact normalization procedures, the total number of candidates in your session, and tie-breaking. Use this as a directional guide for counseling preparation.

What is the best session percentile used for ranking?

If you appear in both sessions (Jan and Apr), NTA considers your best percentile across both sessions for the final merit list. You can use this tool to check your predicted rank for each session separately and plan accordingly.
